Florida’s efforts to ignorantly ban gender affirming care are slowly failing. According to a ruling this week, a U.S. judge has ruled that gender identity is real. It is a major blow for DeSantis’s anti-gay legislation largely fueled by homophobia.
Judge Robert Hinkle issued a preliminary injunction blocking parts of the law. In this case, three specified minors will be allowed access to puberty blockers. DeSantis’s office maintains that the ruling will only apply to the three children and will not be applied statewide.
Hinkle’s straight forward takedown of the law merits a mention. In his ruling, Hinkle noted that it came to be understood that the law from the start was baked in homophobia. Elsewhere he cited that gender identity is real as described and heavily documented by medical professionals despite Republican opposition to the contrary.
