Following an explosive report that detailed how church-leaders allegedly mishandled dozens of sexual assault complaints, the convention has confirmed that the Department of Justice has launched a formal investigation into the matter. The report was first released a while ago by a third party firm called Guidepost Solutions. It all but found that people who reported sexual abuse often were intentionally ignored and then intimidated into keeping quiet.

“Survivors and others who reported abuse were ignored, disbelieved, or met with the constant refrain that the SBC could take no action,” the report found, “even if it meant that convicted molesters continued in ministry with no notice or warning to their current church or congregation.”
