Fake vax cards are on the rise, here’s what you need to know

Spread the love

Fake COVID-19 vaccination cards are blazing across certain sections of the internet at speeds that were almost expected. Pro right-wing; conspiracy riddled, fairly nutty forums are all posting them at breakneck speeds in hopes to convince others to evade getting the jab all together. The cards look fairly real though they’re very much fake.

Over the weekend, we managed to do a deep dive on some of these forums (we won’t link them here though because we don’t want to be responsible for helping spread their false info.). During our weekend dive, we found that even college students are getting in on the fake cards because there so far at least is a list of schools requiring them.

American University, Bowdoin College, the University of Colorado Boulder, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Fort Lewis College, Rutgers University and Wesleyan University all require vaccination proof & cards according to their websites. Each of the listed schools requires that students reportedly upload their cards before they’re allowed back on campus. Because America has decided against a national verification system — at least for the long run card verification seems to be how this will go.

The most prominent one we could find is perhaps 4chan. On 4Chan, people are advised to see if their local health departments have templates still available for the cards. Those templates are what allow people to create the fake cards thereby bypassing any verification requirements and potentially having COVID themselves and not telling anyone.

If you encounter a fake vaccination card it is against the law and should be reported to the police.
