Virgina has outlawed the death penalty

In a dramatic turn of events for the Commonwealth, Virginia no longer allows access to the death penalty in terms of punishment. According to press reports, Gov Northam finally announced the long sought Democratic bill that forbids such executions simply because they’re inhumane. Democrats in the state have long argued that the death penalty has been incorrectly applied to the poor; mentally ill, and otherwise people of minority backgrounds (particularly Black people.)

During a press conference on Wednesday, Northam was delighted to confirm that all execution chambers in the state have been closed. The last two remaining death row inmates will have their sentences converted to life without parole.

“There is no place today for the death penalty in this commonwealth, in the South, or in this nation,” Northam said.
