According to a Columbia Medical Research report a new COVID-19 variant has been detected in New York City. According to CNN, that variant has been identified as B.1526 and is considered to be a homegrown variant. It is unclear what the present transmission rate of the variant is as the report has not yet been fully published.

It comes as embattled Governor Cuomo is poised to continue to lift restrictions within the city. Though many are concerned about reopening before everyone is fully vaccinated.

According to the research report, this variant like others contains what is called E484k. E484k reportedly is a mutation that allows the virus to slip past some of the natural immune areas of the body thereby creating an even stickier situation than the last time.
