The Texas woman who was notoriously charged with supposedly illegally voting a few years ago is back in the news. Mason, a Black woman, was charged with 5 years in 2016 under the guise of allegedly having illegally voted although her ballot was actually thrown out entirely. According to the Huffington Post, Mason, has now appealed that verdict and remains out on bond.
“This is one of the most important voting rights cases in modern Texas history,” said Andre Segura, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, in a press release announcing the appeal.
Mason maintains that in 2016 —- she was not aware that she was ineligible to vote. The appeal is pending.
